One day while we were still in Indiana having revival
services, I was praying on the side of a steep hill. There was a young
man praying with me, but he was on the other side. While we were
earnestly praying and seeking God, suddenly the Lord spoke to my heart.
(I still believe that God can and will speak to you, if you will
listen.) He said, "Go to Anderson, South Carolina, and there you
will receive an 'End-Time Message of Deliverance for the Bride of Jesus
Christ.’"
Well, I had never heard anything like that in my life,
"End-Time Message for the Bride." I didn't know what that was about.
I kept praying, "God, I'll go anywhere but Anderson. I've been
there before. That's a religious place! God, keep me away from
that! No... I can't go there!" I screamed out.
The young man with me came running, "What is it, Bro.
Shelley?"
"Oh, I hate to tell you. God just spoke to me to go
to Anderson, South Carolina."
He said, "No! I hate that place. Do you remember
what I told you? I said I would go with you to the ends of the world
because you witnessed to me. When I was rebellious, God saved,
delivered and filled me with the Holy Ghost. I told you that I would
drive you, that I would go with you anywhere. But I've just changed my
mind."
I said, "Nevertheless, we must go."
We closed that meeting and started toward Anderson.
We went as far as we could and stopped in a motel. Before I went to
sleep, the Spirit of God impressed something on my heart. I told the
young man to get me the map. I wanted him to go out there with a
compass and determine the direction Anderson was. I asked him to turn
the hood of my Pontiac car toward Anderson, because I wouldn't be able to
sleep until it was done. You see, I was determined to do what God had
told me to do.
I knew one couple in Anderson, and I told them, "I've
come here to obey God."
"Good, a Holiness Church has been trying to contact you for
a revival," they said.
When I went to that church to start a revival, the Spirit
of the Lord began to deal with me about wearing His name. He said to
me,"You must be baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ."
Many people say that it does not matter, but I have Peter’s revelation, the
one that he spoke about in Acts chapter two. He taught me the
difference between the titles of Father, Son and Holy Ghost and THE Name.
When God gave me that revelation, I preached it with
boldness in the church I was holding a revival in. I did not know what
a sore spot this was in the church world. It went over like a lead
balloon, but they didn't close my meetings down because of all the healings
that were taking place. The general overseer said, "He's preaching
false doctrine, but I can't touch the man."
So I kept preaching. While praying and fasting the
next day, God took me to the Scripture where it speaks of Melchizedek who had
neither father, nor mother. He had neither beginning of days, nor
ending of life, but was made like unto the Son of God, a priest continually.
That night I preached, Who Is This Melchizedek?
When I was called on the carpet that night, I asked,
"Brothers, if He is not who I said He was, then tell me, who is this?"
The overseer said, "I've got a better explanation than that. His birth
certificate was destroyed in a fire."
But it says, "He had no mother. He had no father.
He had no beginning of days, nor ending of life." Since God gave
me that revelation, I preached the same thing the next night. I was
still very young and did not use much wisdom. I was so excited about
what God was revealing to me in His word, I must have thought that everybody
would be that excited.
Then I began to preach that if someone had received the
true Baptism of the Holy Ghost, the evidence needed to be more than just
speaking in tongues. There needed to be a changed life, one that was
walking in obedience to the Word. Did that ever upset some of the
people! In one week's time, it seemed that God was taking me so much
deeper into the revelation of His Word.
I preached it with everything that I had, and my meetings
were going from a thousand to one hundred or less. I couldn't
understand why. I thought everybody wanted more revelation.
I did not know then that some people love their “sacred cows” more
than truth! I started preaching these things on radio. The
pastor said, "Bro. Shelley, I love you with all my heart. But, I might
just close this revival down, because it's causing me too much trouble."
A lady preacher came to me and said, "Bro. Shelley, you can
have the keys to my church building. You can keep preaching this in my
church."
She said, "Sweetheart, a man like you who's come in here
and preached what God laid on his heart and then prayed for the sick...
Don't you know that was my daughter you prayed for last night? Didn't
you see that growth on the side of her head, under her ear? That's been
there all of her life, and the doctor had just examined it and said it was
cancer. You prayed for her, and it fell right off. I know
you're a man of God. I don't care what you preach. Just
come to my building to do it." So I kept preaching the things God was
dealing with me about, but eventually she got upset. The next night
she didn't come to hear me in her own church.
I got in my automobile and drove up the city streets of
Anderson and said, "God, show me where you want me to have a church.
I don't know what this 'End-Time Message' is, but I'm willing, oh God,
I'm willing." I saw a big beautiful brick church. I said,
"Lord, wouldn't that be wonderful?"
The Spirit of God spoke to my heart, "That'll be your
church. That's where you'll be when you'll receive the 'End-Time
Message.'" (In three months' time, they lost the building, and we had
an opportunity to buy it.) Meanwhile, we were having services at the
storefront building. I ran an ad saying, "Holiness Church!
Don't come if you have a church, but if you are backslidden and need help,
come!"
Thirty people were there that first Sunday morning.
God was getting ready to receive me. The church filled up.
People got saved and received the Holy Ghost. God gave dreams and
visions to the people. It was a spiritual church - all loving people.
A new couple came. She had a little bun on the back
of her head. I didn't know who they were. When I preached, he said
"Amen" more than anybody else. It was Bro. Gerald Cleveland and his
wife, and here is his testimony.
